Biography
Steenhuis joined the Cornell faculty in 1977. His research interests relate to the interaction of water and agricultural toxic flow, and to the use of microcomputers in water-management design. He is a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, and the International Soil Science Society.
Research Interests
"The primary focus of our research is on the management of soil and water resources as they relate to agricultural processes. This requires an understanding of the complex interrelations among morphology, water flow, plant growth, and fertility. The research proceeds, therefore, from basic processes governing these relationships, and leads to fundamental and universally applicable solutions to engineering design problems in water management.
The research program currently emphasizes the fate of agricultural toxics and nutrients applied to the land. Conditions allowing the occurrence of wetting-front instability for layered soils such as are found on Long Island are being studied, as well as the water quality of tile drain effluents in nonhomogeneous soils. These studies will lead to mathematical models to realistically describe the movement of toxics and water under field conditions.
Another area of research is the application of computer graphics in water-management design. Procedures have been developed for designing subsurface drainage systems, for the hydraulic loading of land treatment sites, and for tracking pesticides through the vadose and saturated zones; the latter can be used as a screening tool. Other computer-based design tools are under development."
