Short Course Details

The 2008 course will be held in at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA on July 28-31, 2008.

This course is intended to give a thorough coverage of the design, operation, and management of water reuse systems for finfish (limited coverage of indoor shrimp production). This course is offered as a “hands‐on” or a “distance learning” opportunity. Dr. Michael B. Timmons of the Cornell Aquaculture Program and Dr. James Ebeling of Aquaculture Systems Technology, New Orleans, LA) will teach the course. A combination of laboratory demonstrations and classroom presentations will be offered. At the conclusion of the workshop, individuals should be able to design their own water reuse systems and have a fundamental knowledge of the principles influencing design decisions. The following topics will be addressed: shrimp

Water quality monitoring and measurement
Engineering design of individual unit processes
System management
Fish health management
Economic and risk evaluation
Tours of local aquaculture facilities (Tentative)
Indoor Shrimp

July 28 to July 31, 2008. The course begins at 9:00am on Monday and concludes at 4 PM on Thursday.

Cost

$765 for Hands On students. (A $20 discount will be applied if paying by U.S. Bank Check, total cost $745). $250 deposit required with registration. Remainder can be paid prior to or at the course site. Checks can be made payable to Cornell University, or payment may be accepted by credit card using the online registration form. Registration Hands-On requires pre-registration. Limited enrollment. Register by July 25, 2008. There will be a $50 discount for students who attend both the Cornell Short Course and the International Conference on Recirculating Aquaculture Virginia Tech.
